Reading a Floor Plan for Everyday Living

A floor plan is more than a drawing of rooms. It is a picture of how you may move through the home, where everyday tasks happen and how shared and private spaces connect.

Start with your routine. Think about where you enter, where bags and shoes can be kept, and how easily groceries can reach the kitchen. Consider whether the dining area is convenient to both the kitchen and the living room.

Look at how bedrooms are placed in relation to common areas. A little separation can make it easier for different members of a household to rest, work or study. Check the location of bathrooms, storage and utility areas too.

Pay attention to circulation: doors, corridors and furniture should allow people to move comfortably. If possible, compare the plan with the actual room dimensions and imagine where your furniture could fit. A thoughtful review of the layout helps you assess whether a home can support your everyday life.
